What does it mean to be a “conscientious hiker”? How does the “land ethic” in Aldo Leopold’s 'A Sand County Almanac' apply to us in our recreational activities? Join a discussion and presentation led by Susan Charkes and other members of the Chester County Sierra Club. Charkes is the author of “Best Day Hikes Near Philadelphia” and other books, and is a hiking leader with Appalachian Mountain Club. Susan will also present an overview of the best places to hike in and around the area.

You're also invited to join us on Saturday, September 6th for a group hike as we take the conversation outdoors. The hike will take place from 1 to 5 PM. We'll meet at the Crow’s Nest Preserve parking lot. This moderate, 6 mile trail hike will include more discussion. We’ll also look for fall’s late wildflowers and southbound migrating birds.

***This Event is part of our Make A Difference Series. Join us for a month of programming and volunteer your time at EXTON PARK on Saturday,September 20 for West Whiteland Township's 6th Annual Make A Difference Day!

Activities will include: Restoration work on the berm area near the dam at the far end of the pond, including restoration planting of the berm with native wildflowers, grasses and sedges.

Planting replacement trees, flowering plants and herbs near the parking area.

Children’s activities. Please note that some activities will not be suitable for young children.

Join us for this one act play by Beacon Theatre Productions that portrays a significant meeting that took place during the Civil War. After the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Lincoln early in 1863, the Union Army began to enlist African American men into service. One of the first “colored regiments” to be formed was the Massachusetts 54th. Frederick Douglass, an ex-slave and well known abolitionist speaker of the day, was concerned that the men in the 54th have the same wages and privilege as the White soldiers in the Union Army. He requested, and was granted, an appointment with the president in August of 1863 to address these concerns, which is the subject of this piece.

“Mr. President, I’m Frederick Douglass” is based on Douglass’s and Lincoln’s writings and a fictional character named Cornelia is added for theatrical interest. Through the eyes of Cornelia, we are further led to events of 1864, 1865, and beyond, reflecting on the continued legacy of these inspiring men.

Book of Ages: The Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin
Author
Jill Lepore
Review
I actually did not finish this book, which is very hard for me. I hate to be a quitter, but there are so many books on my "to read" list and this one was just was not what I had hoped. I had hoped to hear Jane Franklin's story, but what it ended up to be was a description of what life in general was like for women in this time period. There were many of Ben Franklin's thoughts and adventures but very little about "Jenny". After reading about 50 pages, I skipped to the middle of the book and read a few pages to see if perhaps her voice would come through later in the text and I felt that it was just more of the same.   Click here to see if this book is in our catalog!
