Learning to read begins long before children start school. Research shows that early childhood experiences have a great impact on a child’s ability to learn language and literacy skills. Children who grow up in a stimulating environment where parents and other caregivers talk and read to them are more likely to become fluent readers and eager learners.

Experts have identified five essential early literacy or pre-reading skills that children must know before they can actually learn to read. Learn how to develop these important skills through our Every Child Ready to Read: Workshop for Parents of Preschoolers.

A PA Forward Basic Literacy Program.

What We See When We Read: A Phenomenology With Illustrations
Author
Peter Mendelsund
Review
An exploration of how we visualize when we read (focusing on fiction reading). Offers many ideas about how the typical reader visualizes, but also actively sensitizes the reader to the reading experience by calling attention to how the reader is visualizing during the process of reading this book. The author is an award-winning designer of book covers. Heavily illustrated. A fascinating and unique book.  Click here to see if this book is in our catalog!

Aimless Love: Selected Poems
Author
Billy Collins
Review
Billy Collins is a popular contemporary poet. He was the U.S. Poet Laureate 2001-2003.
Collins' poetry is much easier to understand than that of most poets. He has a wonderful comic sense, the opposite of the stereotype of the melancholy poet. He is able to share with us his amusement at the comic moments of life and his bemusement at the sad ones.
Many of his poems take a closer look at the quirky things in life that we often gloss over, like "The Chair That No One Sits In." Others explore the comedy of taking a different viewpoint, like "A Dog on His Master."
The comedy in his poetry often comes from what he calls reversals. A good explanation of this technique is in these lines from his poem "Lakeside":
"It was like the curious figure
of the duck/rabbit".
Aimless Love is a large collection that includes poems from some of his previous books as well as many new poems.  Click here to see if this book is in our catalog!
