The Corsican Caper
Author
Peter Mayle
Review
Peter Mayle, author of "A Year in Provence," has also penned a series set in France, which features Sam Levitt as the main sleuth and Elena Morales as his sidekick and main squeeze. The descriptions of the country side and the meals are lyrical. While enjoying many French delights, the pair figure out a way to dissuade Russian kingpin Oleg Bronsky from eliminating their friend Francis Reboul so that he could purchase Reboul's beautiful seaside villa.  Click here to see if this book is in our catalog!

The Girl with all the Gifts
Author
M. R. Carey
Review
This book is something else entirely… Much like the main character, in fact. That’s no spoiler; you find out on page one that she’s different. It takes all of the rest of pages to figure out why.

I doubt reading this book would ever have occurred to me without a recommendation. It says “emotionally charged” right there in the description! That’s my least favorite way for something to be! I prefer emotionally drained, or at most emotionally ambivalent. Even so, I definitely don’t regret it.

There are a lot of really smart references, at least relative to the subject matter. The whole thing presents a few neat philosophical quandaries. None of them are particularly novel, even within the genre, but I think they may be better written here. I especially enjoy a story where I don’t despise any of the characters, even the intentionally despicable ones. My hat is off to you, sir!  Click here to see if this book is in our catalog!

Great book! Fast read, a little more heavy into demonology than I would like. I knew nothing about it when I picked it up on a recommendation from the librarian and I'm glad I did! I'm going to start on the second book of the series soon.  Click here to see if this book is in our catalog!
