I remember reading the first installment years ago and I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. It was a re-envisioning of the "Alice" trope with a zombie lens and it's written by one of my favorite romance authors. However, I feel that the pacing of the first story was lacking, which is why I didn't have huge expectations for this novel.
However, I was thoroughly surprised. She fixed the pacing problem of the first novel and was able to keep me captivated throughout the entire story. However, seeing that it is a young adult novel, it really didn't delve into topics that I would have liked to see it hit, but that is the fault of the genre rather than the author in itself.
Otherwise, I really loved reading this and discovering the problems that Ali was going through and by the end, I saw how this novel would have resonated with a teenager, who would quickly self-identify with the rebellious, "I can take care of myself" attitude that Ali possesses. Overall, a great read if you're looking for something that isn't too thought-provoking. Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library Card Catalog
